* * * *

The next morning Sari opened his eyes to find himself still in Max’s home. Only Max wasn’t in the bed. He couldn’t believe that yesterday—or the previous days—hadn’t been a dream. Sari was really in panther territory.

Tossing the sheet aside, Sari got out of bed and opened the French doors. He gasped when he spotted a large garden out back, filled with fresh fruits and vegetables. There was even a pen with goats and another with chickens inside.

Sari felt a zing of excitement rush through him as he wandered outside and gazed over the garden. There was everything from fresh strawberries, to tomatoes, and even cabbage and cucumbers. These shifters really did live a clean life.

“Find everything okay?” Max asked from behind him.

“You have goats.” Sari pointed out the obvious. He wanted to smack his forehead.

Max walked further into the garden, plucking some grapes and tossing them into his mouth. “And chickens.”

Sari looked up at the way Max’s throat muscles worked and then glanced away. He could feel his cheeks heating up and grasped for something intelligent to say.

“I’ve been looking for someone to take over this garden.” Max plucked a few more grapes from the vine. “Trey usually tends to it, but he’s been swamped at work.”

Sari could feel the excitement building inside of him. “I’m pretty good with vegetation. I used to work at a nursery. I have a green thumb,” he boasted with a smile. Although Sari wanted to escape this place and run for the hills, having something to occupy his time until he made a dash couldn’t hurt.

“Do you want to take over the solarium as well?” Max asked as he smiled, and Sari had to stop himself from inhaling sharply. Did Max know how truly handsome he was? The air seemed to thicken around them as Sari gazed into Max’s greenish-amber eyes.

“Sari?”

Sari blinked and felt his skin getting hotter by the second. He found it hard to manage an intelligent thought when Max was so close. The man might be a loon, but he had the power to mesmerize Sari. “Yes?”

God, he was a goober.

“Do you want to take over the solarium?” Max’s tone held a hint of amusement. The guy knew Sari was mentally drooling like an idiot. The knowledge probably fed the man’s huge ego.

The lust-filled fog dissipated and Sari was able to think once more. “I’ll need rubber boots, gloves, gardening tools, and a sun hat. My skin tends to burn easily.”

Max’s smile was dreamy. “I can arrange all of that for you.”

“Thanks.” Sari hurried back inside before he embarrassed himself even further. When he entered the solarium, he saw the items he had asked for, sitting on a small table. There was even a radio next to the gloves. He wasn’t sure how Max did his little trick, but Sari was grateful he could start right away.

As the sounds of jazz filled the solarium, Sari spent the rest of the day trimming down a lot of the plants.
